The Grapes of Wrath

by John Steinberg, adapted by Frank Galati
Pitlochry Festival Theatre

Franks Galati’s superb Steppenwolf adaptation of John Steinbeck’s epic novel of the Great Depression in America’s ‘Dustbowl’ was staged at the ‘Theatre in the Hills’ to great acclaim. Featuring a large cast of professional actors and a superb team of supernumeries from the local community, this powerful production made the most of Pitlochry Festival Theatre’s large open stage. Filled with powerful drama, devastatingly effective use of music and songs and a superb design from Adrian Rees, the play was a big hit with audiences.

“Unforgettable…A fine set of performances from the large cast… a big, bold production.” Joy Waters, Dundee Courier

“Alexander’s staging has a fine grasp of the outraged humanity contained within Steinbeck’s neo-biblical imagery.” Mark Brown, The Sunday Herald

“….a heartfelt new production at Pitlochry Festival Theatre by director Ken Alexander, and there’s no denying that it makes uncomfortable viewing for audiences long-since trained to regard socialism as a dead letter. The action is driven along by a powerful strand of American folk-music, much of it played live on stage.”  Joyce McMillan, The Scotsman
